Alphonse Grebel
B. 1885

Alphonse Grebel was born March 14, 1885 in Hirson, France.

Grebel was a sculptor, painter and decorator.  He studied in Paris at l’École Boulle, l’École des Arts Décoratifs, and l’École des Beaux-Arts.

Grebel served in World War I and due to this experience, he produced many deeply sad and emotional works that depict war scenes of soldiers in trenches. Grebel later became known for his more romantic works. He employed a style and technique evoking Impressionistic influence.  Additionally, the influence of Rodin can be seen in power and expression of his subjects.

While living and working in the South of France he painted the local landscapes, particularly of the island of Corsica.
Grebel created public sculptures in the south of France including La Baigneuse in Juan-les-Pins and the Monument Capron in Cannes.

Grebel exhibited in Paris at the Salon des Indépendants and Salon d’Automne.  He won a gold medal at l’Exposition des Arts Décoratifs in 1925.  He also exhibited in New York.
