Joseph Marius Jean Avy

1871-1939

JM Avy was born on September 21, 1971 in Marseille, France. He is best known as a painter, pastellist, and illustrator, often depicting mythological subjects, as well as figurative and genre scenes.

Avy was a pupil of both Bonnet and Albert Maignan. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris between 1900-1941, and at the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts between 1934-1939.

He was awarded several prizes and medals, including the Prix Marie Bashkirtseff in 1900, second-class medal in 1903, Diplome d’honneur in 1937, and the Chevalier of the Légion d’Honneur and Croix de Guerre.

Avy’s work is in the collections of museums in Amersterdam, Boston, Chicago, Lille, Lyons, Luxembourg Marseilles, the Petit Palais in Paris, and Roubaix. Additionally, Avy worked as a decorator and painted scenes that are in the town hall of Rotterdam.
