Abel Bertram Abel Bertram was
born in Saint-Omer, France in 1871. A true Postimpressionist,
he studied under Léon Bonnat and Antoine Guillemet. He exhibited
at the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris in 1899; he won an
honorable mention at the same exhibition in 1901. Bertram exhibited
at the Salon des Indépendants from 1905 to 1939. He also exhibited
at the Salon d’Automne and the Salon des Tuileries, as well as
the Salon National des Beaux-Arts. Bertram painted a wide variety of subject matters, including still lifes, landscapes, flowers, and figures. His paintings are distinguished by a unique palette, and unusual use of color. Bertram used primary colors, which he mixed himself to achieve the desired tones. In his nudes especially he manages to create a wonderful sense of intimacy with the model. |
