Hermann Courtens

1884-1956

Herman Courtens was born in Saint-Josse-ten-Noode, Brussels, Belgium in 1884. He was the son of Franz Courtens and Isidore Verheyden and his son was the esteemed sculptor Alfred Courtens.

Courtens is best known for his paintings of figures, genre scenes and still lifes. He exhibited at the Salon de la Société des Beaux-Arts and in 1941 C. Conrardy wrote a catalog essay about Courtens’ work for an exhibition held at La Petite Galerie in Brussels. Courtens was a professor at the Institute Supérieur des Beaux-Arts as well.

Courtens died in 1956 in Ixelles, Brussels.
