Joseph Newman
1890 – 1979

Joseph Newman was born in 1890 in New York City.

He studied at the Pratt Institute Art School and Adelphi College, as well as in Paris. Newman served in the U.S. Army during W.W.I. After the war, he married and travelled to Europe. He came home in the mid 1920's to form, with a group of contemporaries, The Fifteen Gallery in Manhattan.

He was a member of the Salmagundi Club, the American Watercolor Society, the Rockport Art Association, Allied Artists, the New York Watercolor Club, and the Tiffany Foundation.

He exhibited at the Whitney Museum from 1921-1928; Salons of America from 1923-1934; Society of Independent Artists in 1926. His work is in the permanent collections of the Brooklyn Museum, the Newark Museum, and the Lewis Comfort Tiffany Foundation.
