Jules Bernaerts (Pieter Julius)
1882-1957

Jules Bernaerts was born in 1882 in Malines, Belgium. Having studied at l’Académie de Bruxelles under Van der Stappen, Bernaerts was a skilled sculptor, metalworker and painter.

In 1903 he exhibited at the Salon Triennal des Beaux-Arts in Brussels and went on to compete for the Prix de Rome of sculpture in 1906 and 1912, and later for painting in 1907 and 1910. In 1914 Bernaerts worked in England.

Bernaerts created a large oeuvre of busts, reliefs, portraits, nudes and religious icons; he also created several monuments throughout Belgium such as the “Monument Louis-
Schmidt” in Etterbeek.
