Raymond Cornilleau

1887-1975

Cornilleau was born 10 December 1887, in Paris; died 1975.

He was a watercolourist, painter. nudes, portraits, still-lifes, landscapes.

As a young boy, Raymond Cornilleau left Paris for India to join his father. It was perhaps during his time there that he learned to appreciate the interplay of contrasting light and shade. On his return, he was attracted to photography but opted instead to study drawing, enrolling at the Atelier Luc-Olivier Merson at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He subsequently studied at the École des Arts Décoratifs in Paris.

Cornilleau was awarded the City of Paris medal. He went on to exhibit at the Salon d'Automne and the Salon des Artistes Indépendants before returning to his native Anjou.

Cornilleau produced Parisian cityscapes in oil and occasional heavily-shadowed gouaches, but he was first and foremost a watercolourist.
