Albert Theodore Stewart was born on April 9, 1900 in Kensington, England. He immigrated to the United States in 1908.

From 1927-1939 Stewart lived in New York City, where he studied at the Beaux-Arts Institute of Design, the Art Students League, and also with Paul Manship. In 1939 Stewart moved to California and joined the faculty at Scripps College in Claremont, a position which he held until shortly before his death in 1965.

Stewart was a WPA artist. He taught at Scripps College in Claremont, California for 25 years. Stewart was a member of the National Sculpture Society, the Architectural League of America, and was an associate member of the National Academy of Design in 1937, becoming a full member in 1945.

He exhibited at the National Academy of Design in 1927 and 1931, winning prizes both times. He also exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 1927-1928, winning a gold medal. Other exhibitions include the Art Institute of Chicago, the Los Angeles County Fair, the Architectural League of America, and the Pasadena Art Institute.

Stewart’s work is in the collections of the Fogg Museum of Art, the Reading Museum of Art, Scripps College, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Seamen’s Institute, Williams College, Amherst College, and many others.

He died in Claremont, California on September 23, 1965.
