Jean-Marie Vervisch
1896-1977

Jean Vervisch was born in Etterbeek Belgium in 1896. He was a student at l’Académie de Saint-Josse-ten-Noode.
Vervisch began exhibiting in 1925, he showed with Cercle Artistique de Schaerbeek. From 1927 to 1933 he exhibited in Brussels with the Cercle Artistique et Littéraire. In 1928 he exhibited at Galerie Thémis, and charitable exhibition, with James Ensor, and many other astists. In the late 1920’s and 1930’s he exhibited at the Palais des Beaux-Arts. He exhibited often at Galerie l’Atelier with Léon Navez, Marcel Stobbaerts, and Albert Crommelynck.
In 1931 he went to Paris and associated with the group Le Chaînon.

Vervisch traveled to North Africa and Italy in subsequent years, like many artists of his generation. He lived for thirty years in Maraiakerke-Ostende, Belgium.
Vervisch was a friend of James Ensor, Léon Spilliaert, Jean Brusselmans, and Edgat Tygat.

Vervisch was a Postimpressionist, he used Cubist elements in his early work, and later the Expressionist technique of his fellow Belgian Modernists. He painted nudes, still lifes, and landscapes, always with a passion that is evident in the vibrant period in which he lived.

There was a retrospective of his paintings at Galerie Patrick Lancz in Brussells in the late 1990’s; an impressive catalogue was produced with many illustrations of his work.

Vervisch is represented in the museum of Saint-Josse-ten-Noode, and Ypres.
